2Plain and simple?  Jun 24, 2010
My wife and I read Buddhism Plain and Simple together, aloud, so we could discuss our understanding of what we were reading as we went along. We had hoped for a plain and simple set of explanations about Buddhism in order to take away the essence of Buddha-dharma teachings and incorporate them into our lives. Instead, we found his explanations to be too abstract or vague in many places; most of his analogies were weak, at best. It would seem Mr. Hagen has not studied the basics of Philosophy in order to make proper use of deductive and inductive reasoning in his writing; moreover, the book seemed poorly organized. His ability as a teacher and writer are very limited. After we got through about 70% of the text, we decided it was a waste of time and gave up on it. We both had courses in Philosophy and Rhetoric in high school and college, both at the undergraduate and graduate level; we find that most non-fiction writers and their book editors in today's market are not well schooled in the classics and the elements of style. In Mr. Hagen's defense, it seemed to us that many other books on this topic we perused were equally weak in these areas.

5Very straight-forward  Jun 11, 2010
There is a ton of great stuff in here and it's very accessible.

It was pretty obvious to me after finishing this book that the worse thing about Buddhism is the name. I think a LOT more people in the west could adopt these principles if they didn't have such an odd name attached to them. But as we learn in this book, this problem with names is true for everything with a name: the name never does the thing justice but still influences our decisions.

Now stop wasting time and just buy it. You'll be very glad you did once you begin applying the learnings.

Cheers,
Don

I have read this book over and over. Very down to earth. Much appreciated take on an often misunderstood exploration

5Great over view of Buddhism  Jun 01, 2010
The author gave me the information I wanted to know about how Buddhism can make my life more peaceful and meaningful in this confusing world we live in. Excellent for people searching for a spiritual path in their lives.

Straightforward and clear. Best intro to the philosophy and principles of Buddhism I've ever read. I just wish I'd read it first!
