Description:

Throughout our lives we long to love ourselves more deeply and find a greater sense of connection with others. Our fear of intimacy—both with others and with ourselves—creates feelings of pain and longing. But these feelings can also awaken in us the desire for freedom and the willingness to take up the spiritual path.

In this inspiring book, Sharon Salzberg, one of America's leading spiritual teachers, shows us how the Buddhist path of lovingkindness can help us discover the radiant, joyful heart within each of us. This practice of lovingkindness is revolutionary because it has the power to radically change our lives, helping us cultivate true happiness in ourselves and genuine compassion for others. The Buddha described the nature of such a spiritual path as "the liberation of the heart, which is love." The author draws on simple Buddhist teachings, wisdom stories from various traditions, guided meditation practices, and her own experience from twenty-five years of practice and teaching to illustrate how each one of us can cultivate love, compassion, joy, and equanimity—the four "heavenly abodes" of traditional Buddhism.

5A master of compassionate mindfulness practice  Mar 15, 2010
Sharon is one of the best know teachers on the subject of metta or loving-kindness. Often thought of as a Buddhist version of prayer for the well-being of others, metta is actually much deeper that that. It describes the natural property of mindfulness, the openness of mind and heart to receive reality as it is, without prejudice. Metta as a spiritual perfection depends entirely on mindfulness, and mindfulness is the expression of metta. I also recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation', available through Amazon.

5A Staple  Jan 22, 2010
This has become a staple of my therapy practice. Lovingkindness (metta) meditation is a reliable resource for those interested in Buddhism and for those who know nothing of it. It speaks elegantly about how we regard ourselves, how we regard others, and the inseparability of the two. It reassures us that intentionally working toward loving ourselves is not "selfish" because is opens the gateway to loving others. The author provides structured meditation exercises which "work", whether one believes they will work or not. Just do it!

4Loving-kindness  Jan 07, 2010
'SO appropriate for this day and age where your fellow man or even your family is not given much empathy..... and I also discovered a new meaning for COMPASSION !!!!! I am re-reading so as to put the "meditation" into practice. Thank you Sharon...(Author)

5Loving-Kindness  Dec 16, 2009
This book is well written. It is an easy to understand explaination on how to meditate the Metta Prayer. May all who read it be happy. May all who don't read it awaken to the light of their true nature. Namaste : )
