The image of the Laughing Buddha is based on a wandering Chinese monk, Budai (Hotei, in Japanese) who lived centuries ago and is believed to be Maitreya, or the Buddha to come. The statues plump figure and benign countenance suggest contentment, magnanimity and plenitude. Folklore has it that rubbing his pot belly brings good fortune and wealth. The joyful spirit of Happy Buddha is well communicated in this two-toned carved statue. Hand carved out of wood, the statue measures 8 inches high and 7 inches wide.
Handmade: Skillfully made by artisans. Each piece is unique. Organic variations in wood, imperfections due to hand work, and minor variations may occur enhancing individual artistic character. The color tones will vary from piece to piece.
