About Meditation Cushions

What these are

A collection of zafu cushions and zabuton mats built for sitting practice. The zafu is the round cushion that lifts the hips so the pelvis can tip forward and the knees settle toward the floor; the zabuton is the flat mat that goes underneath to cushion ankles, shins and the tops of the feet. Covers come in chenille, denim, brocade, twill weave and quilted honeycomb, in deep blue, rust, gray, turquoise, plum and black. Some are plain; others carry symbols and phrases lotus, moon phases, yin yang, and messages like just breathe, feed the spirit and temple motifs. Prices run from about $48 to $98.

How to choose

Start with the sit. A round zafu, roughly 16 inches across and 5 inches high and filled with buckwheat hulls, is the classic shape for cross-legged postures; the hulls shift to hold the seat and weigh in around 6 to 7 pounds, giving the cushion a stable, grounded feel. Add a zabuton mat if you sit on hard floors or if your ankles and knees ask for more padding. For symbolism, choose what mirrors your intention lotus and moon phases are often associated with mindfulness and inner peace, yin yang with balance, and word-based covers like just breathe with calm.

Care

Unzip the cotton cover and spot clean or hand wash it as needed, then air dry. The buckwheat-filled insert itself stays inside and is not washed. Fluff and reshape the cushion between sits so the hulls redistribute evenly.

Is one zafu enough, or do I need the zabuton too?

A zafu alone works well on a rug or soft floor. On wood, tile or concrete, a zabuton mat placed beneath softens the space around your knees, shins and ankles, so the sit stays comfortable for longer sessions.

Which cover should I gift someone starting a practice?

A plain chenille, denim or twill zafu in a calm color like deep blue, gray or black suits most rooms. If you know their intention, a symbol cover lotus, moon phases, yin yang or a phrase like just breathe makes the gift more personal.

Can I match the cushion to an intention I am working with?

Yes. Many people keep a cushion whose color or symbol reflects what they are practicing lotus and moon phases are traditionally linked with mindfulness and inner peace, yin yang with balance, and word covers with calm or self care.
