Four-armed Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion the Tibetans call Chenrezig, cast in bronze with a dark antique finish. The front hands meet at the heart around the wish-fulfilling jewel, the right hand lifts a mala and the left a lotus. He sits on a double lotus base, small enough for a desk or a shelf altar.

Meaning & Intention

Avalokiteshvara is the bodhisattva who hears the cries of the world. In Tibet he is Chenrezig, the one who looks with unwavering eyes, and his six-syllable mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, is the most spoken prayer in the Himalaya.

The four arms show how compassion works. Two hands hold the jewel of the awakened heart close, one hand counts the mala of steady practice, and one holds a lotus that rises clean out of the mud.

Set him where you sit. His gaze is lowered, not away from the world but toward it.

Who is Chenrezig?

The Tibetan name for Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. The Dalai Lamas are held to be his emanations, and his mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, is carved on stones and spun in prayer wheels across the Himalaya.

How is this different from the gold leaf Chenrezig?

Same deity, different hand. This one is a little taller, with a dark antique bronze finish and no paint; the other is painted with gold leaf. Both are cast in Nepal.

Where should I place it?

Traditionally at or above eye level when you are seated, facing into the room. A shelf, a desk corner or a small altar all work. Keep it out of damp spots so the finish stays even.
