A pocket-sized Tibetan trinket box worked edge to edge in red seed beads and brass, its lid built around a brass medallion with turquoise and coral inlay, ringed by coral, reconstituted turquoise, resin beads or cowrie shells. Each lid is composed by hand in Nepal, so no two boxes match. The lined interior keeps rings and earrings safe.

Design: Round box with a lift-off lid; red resin seed beads with brass accents on the sides, lid centered on a brass medallion with turquoise and coral inlay, surrounded by coral, reconstituted turquoise, resin beads and sometimes cowrie shells. Lid designs vary, so the box you receive will differ from the photos
Size: 2.5" high x 2.375" in diameter; the interior is about 2" across
Material: Resin beads, brass, reconstituted turquoise, coral and shell; fabric-lined interior
Care: Dust with a soft, dry brush. Keep away from water and lotions, which can loosen the beadwork
Note: Handmade, so small irregularities in the beading and variation in color and lid design are part of the craft, not flaws

Meaning & Intention

Coral and turquoise are the oldest pairing in Himalayan adornment: red for warmth, life and protection from harm, blue for the sky, for health and for a long life. Tibetan jewelry sets them side by side on purpose, and this lid does the same in miniature.

The cowrie shells that appear on some lids traveled to the Himalayas as currency long before coins, and still stand for prosperity and safe passage.

A box this small asks you to choose what matters enough to keep in it.

Will mine look like the photos?

Close, but not identical. The red beadwork, brass medallion and size are constant; the ring of coral, turquoise, beads or cowrie shells around the medallion is composed by hand and varies from box to box.

What fits inside?

A few rings, a pair of earrings, a small pendant or a tumbled stone. The interior is about two inches across and lined with fabric. A full mala will not fit.

Is the lid attached?

No. It lifts off and sits snugly back on the base, so the box opens with one hand.

Is the turquoise real?

The turquoise is reconstituted, the usual choice in Tibetan beadwork, set alongside coral, brass and shell on a bead-covered lid.
