At the center sit the Five Dhyani Buddhas - Vairocana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha, and Amoghasiddhi. In Vajrayana teaching, each presides over a direction and an element, transforming an affliction of mind into its corresponding wisdom.
Ignorance becomes the wisdom of reality, anger becomes mirror-like clarity, pride becomes equanimity, attachment becomes discernment, and envy becomes all-accomplishing action.
Encircling the outer wall is Om Mani Padme Hum, the mantra of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Chanted for centuries across the Himalayas, it is often translated as "the jewel is in the lotus."
Together the five Buddhas and the mantra form a small map from confusion to wisdom, sounded into being with each strike of the rim.
