Each bead on this mala is carved all the way around with the endless knot, the looped Tibetan symbol with no beginning and no end, cut deep in dark brown so the pattern catches light as the strand turns. Strung Tibetan style with two counter strands and rust tassels, long enough to wear as a necklace.

Meaning & Intention

The endless knot is one of the eight auspicious symbols of Tibetan Buddhism: a single line that loops over and under itself and never ends. It stands for how everything depends on everything else, wisdom wound through compassion, cause wound through effect, with no loose thread anywhere.

Carved into a bead it does something practical as well. The ridges give the thumb a grip, so the count moves bead to bead without the eyes. A hundred and eight of them, with a guru bead for the start and two counter strands for the rounds.

What is carved on the beads?

The endless knot, also called the infinite knot, a Tibetan symbol drawn as one line looping through itself without a break. Each bead is cut by hand, so no two knots sit quite the same way.

How do I use it?

Hold it in one hand and move one bead toward you with your thumb for each breath or mantra. Start at the bead beside the guru bead and stop when you reach it again; that is one round.

What are the counter strands for?

They count rounds. After each full circuit, slide one disc bead along the first strand; when that strand is used up, slide one on the second. The discs sit flat against the cord when not in use.
