Meaning & Intention

The Medicine Buddha vowed to heal the sickness of body and mind. In Tibetan painting he is deep blue, the color of lapis, but small gold statues like this one are made for altars and for traveling.

His two hands tell the whole story. The right hand, open on the knee, offers a stem of myrobalan, the fruit at the heart of Himalayan medicine. The left holds the bowl that receives whatever is given. Healing, the image says, is both offering and acceptance.
