A tabletop zen garden built on a soft green wooden tray, filled with fine white sand, river stones, preserved moss, and a live air plant. A slim rake traces patterns through the sand, while a smooth stone engraved with the word Breathe sits among the cluster. Kept on a desk or shelf, it invites a short pause between tasks.

  • Care: Soak the air plant in warm water for 20-30 minutes on arrival. Week 1: soak daily for 15-20 minutes. Week 2 onward: soak every other day. Let dry fully before returning to the tray. Keep preserved moss dry, do not soak or mist
  • Note: Natural stones, a living plant, and preserved moss mean color and shape vary slightly from piece to piece
Meaning & Intention

The miniature zen garden descends from karesansui, the dry landscape gardens tended in Japanese Buddhist temples, where raked gravel stands in for water and stone for mountains or islands.

Monks used the practice as a form of walking meditation, each pass of the rake a chance to still the mind and mark the present moment in sand that will soon be smoothed away.

The stones grouped with moss and the trailing air plant suggest a small wilderness held in balance. The smooth Breathe stone acts as a plain-spoken anchor, a single word to return to when the mind wanders.

Because sand holds no permanent shape, the garden asks to be remade again and again. Every new pattern is a small practice in letting go.

When it arrived, the rake had been snapped in two at some point while shipping. I emailed customer service and they responded that day saying they were sending out a replacement rake. It came a couple days later and contained two replacement rakes! I was impressed.
