A hand-hammered Tibetan singing bowl in an antique-brass finish, etched inside with a mandala of the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra. The interior borders of lotus petals and waves frame the six-syllable mantra of compassion. Tap the rim, then trace the wooden striker slowly around the edge to open a meditation, close a yoga session, or bring a room back to stillness.

Meaning & Intention

The singing bowl is one of the oldest tools of Himalayan meditation practice. Its sustained hum, drawn out by tracing a striker around the rim, has long been used to settle a scattered mind or mark the beginning and end of a sitting.

Etched inside is Om Mani Padme Hum, the six-syllable mantra of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Each syllable is linked to a quality to be cultivated: generosity, ethics, patience, perseverance, concentration, and wisdom.

The lotus and wave borders echo this meaning — the lotus for purity rising out of difficulty, the waves for intention rippling outward from a single point of focus.

Placed on an altar, cushion, or a still corner of a shelf, the bowl becomes a deliberate pause.

Questions & Guidance

How do you play a singing bowl like this one?

Tap the rim once with the striker to start a tone, then trace the striker slowly and steadily around the outer edge with light, even pressure to build the bowl's humming resonance.

Will my bowl sound exactly like the samples I hear online?

No. Audio samples give a basic idea of tone, but because each bowl is handmade, no two sound exactly alike. Part of the practice is meeting the voice of your own bowl.

Where should I keep it between sittings?

Rest the bowl on its cushion on an altar, meditation seat, or a still shelf. Keeping it in the space where you practice makes it easier to open or close a session with a single ring.
