Tingsha are the small Tibetan cymbals struck together to open and close a meditation, their high clear ring hanging in the air long after the strike. This pair is cast in brass and copper, embossed with the eight auspicious symbols and joined by a leather cord, and comes in its own hinged copper case with silver-toned medallions.

Design: Two cymbals in relief with the eight auspicious symbols (conch, endless knot, pair of fish, lotus, parasol, treasure vase, wheel and victory banner) around a lotus boss, joined by a leather cord; hinged round case in copper with silver-tone repoussé medallions and a pin clasp
Size: Cymbals about 2.75" in diameter each; case about 3" in diameter; the set weighs about 1 lb
Material: Brass, copper and other traditional metals; leather cord
Sound: High pitch with a long sustain; strike the rims together at a slight angle and let them ring
Care: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. The antique finish is intentional, so do not polish

Meaning & Intention

Tingsha belong to Tibetan Buddhist ritual, where a single strike marks the beginning and the end of practice and accompanies offerings. The tone is pitched high on purpose: it cuts through a wandering mind and then fades slowly, giving the listener something to follow all the way into silence.

Around each boss sit the eight auspicious symbols, the signs said to have been offered to the Buddha at his awakening: the parasol, the two fish, the vase, the lotus, the conch, the endless knot, the banner and the wheel. Together they stand for a life that is protected, free, full and awake.

Strike them once before you sit, once after, and the sitting has a frame.
