Meaning & Intention

At the center sit the five Dhyani Buddhas: Vairocana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha, and Amoghasiddhi. Each governs a direction, an element, and a wisdom that meets a particular mental affliction, together forming a map of enlightened awareness.

Encircling the bowl inside and out is Om Mani Padme Hum, closely associated with Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Each syllable is linked to a step in purifying body, speech, and mind.

The bowl's rim tone is said to still the chatter of the mind long enough for stillness to be felt rather than described.

Sounded at the start or close of a sitting, it marks the shift from busyness into a slower, more attentive state.

Questions & Guidance

How do I play the bowl?

Tap the side gently with the wooden striker to wake the tone, then press the striker against the outer rim and glide it in a steady circular motion to build a sustained hum.

When is a good time to use it?

Many players sound it at the beginning and end of a meditation to mark the transition. It also works well before journaling, before sleep, or to reset focus at a desk.

Can it be used on an altar without playing it?

Yes. Resting on the silk cushion, the bowl reads as a centerpiece, with the five Buddhas and mantra visible as objects of contemplation.
