Meaning & Intention

The singing bowl traces back to the Himalayan regions of Tibet and Nepal, where these vessels have sounded through monasteries and homes for centuries, calling the mind back to stillness.

Cast from an alloy of seven metals, each said to correspond to a celestial body, the bowl was made to gather sound. One struck note unfolds into a long, layered hum that softens the edges of a room.

To run the striker along the rim is to take part in a ritual older than words, built on vibration rather than language. The tone is used to mark the start or end of meditation, to clear stagnant energy, and to draw scattered attention into a single point.

Its plain form is part of its meaning: power held in function rather than decoration.

Questions & Guidance

How do I play the bowl?

Tap the side gently to sound the first note, then press the wooden striker against the outer rim and move it in a slow, steady circle to build a sustained, singing tone.

Where is a good place to keep it?

On the brocade cushion, set on an altar, meditation shelf, or desk within easy reach. A stable, dry surface protects the finish and lets the sound travel without obstruction.

How might I use it in practice?

Ring it once to open a sitting and once to close it, or sound it before journaling, yoga, or breathwork to draw scattered attention inward. A single strike also works to clear the energy of a room.

Singing Bowl

My husband purchased this Singing Bowl as a surprise for me! I love it! It has such a great sound and I enjoy just sitting and playing it and reap the pleasure from it. Recentlyy, in our weekly yoga class, we lost a great and dear friend to breast cancer. After hearing how much I love my singing bowl, our class took up a donation to purchase this same bowl and, in her honor, we had it engraved in her memory so that every week at the end of our class, this bowl is played and we still have our friend with us!
