A small masterpiece of Himalayan metalwork. Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion known in Tibet as Chenrezig, sits in his four-armed form on a double lotus, every bead of his necklaces and every fold of his skirt cast in bronze and finished in gold leaf by Tibetan artisans in Nepal. Two hands hold a jewel at the heart; the others raise a mala and a lotus.

Meaning & Intention

Avalokiteshvara is the bodhisattva who hears the cries of the world. Tibetans call him Chenrezig, and his six-syllable mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, is the most spoken prayer in the Himalayas.

This is the four-armed form. The two central hands cradle a wish-fulfilling jewel at the heart, the compassionate mind itself. The upper right hand counts a mala, for patience and practice; the upper left holds a lotus, purity rising untouched from the mud.

Statues of this quality are made slowly, by artisans trained in a lineage, and are meant to be kept for a lifetime. On a desk or altar he is a small figure with a large job: to keep compassion within reach.
