Meaning & Intention

Tibetan prayer flags are strung outdoors so the wind can move across their printed mantras and images. Tradition holds that the wind itself becomes the prayer, spreading compassion, wisdom, and goodwill to all it touches.

The five colors follow Tibetan cosmology: blue for sky, white for air, red for fire, green for water, and yellow for earth. Hung in sequence, they are meant to restore balance to the surrounding environment.

At the center of each flag, a seated Buddha is framed by columns of sacred script, traditional invocations for peace and protection.

Across a porch, garden, or window, the flags turn an ordinary current of air into a wordless practice of compassion in motion.

How long will they last outdoors?

As they weather in sun and wind, the colors will soften and the fabric will fade. This is considered part of their purpose, as the prayers are believed to be released into the surroundings over time.
