Are they heavy on the ear?

No. The open, cut-out petal design keeps them notably lightweight, so they stay comfortable for all-day wear.

What is the difference between the two finishes?

Both begin as sterling silver. One is left in a polished silver finish, the other is plated in gold over the same sterling base.

Are they dressy or casual?

Both. The 1.375-inch size wears easily on a workday or a slow morning, and reads dressed-up when the occasion calls for it.

These are even more beautiful in person, and they look like they'd cost far more than they do. They're my new favorite wear-with-everything earrings. My only caveat--which I've told the company--is that the clasps come undone pretty easily. I knew this and was compulsively checking them, but still lost one shortly after receiving them. It's a testament to this company's customer service that when I wrote to warn them about the clasps, they immediately sent me a replacement earring. Now I'm a customer for life. But I do suggest that you use little earring backs with these earrings to keep from losing them.

I am not sure I will keep these hoops. They are nice and different. I don't like the hinged part which goes thru your ear. I would prefer it was set and not on a hinge. It would be easier to put on and off. Thus said, they seem to be good quality and a nice size with a handmade look.
