Meaning & Intention

Medicine Buddha, known in Sanskrit as Bhaisajyaguru, is revered as the healer of both physical and spiritual suffering.

He is recognized by two attributes. The bowl of healing nectar in his left hand represents medicine that cures illness and ignorance alike. The myrobalan plant in his right, a fruit long used in traditional healing, is considered a symbol of his power to cure all ailments.

Seated on a lotus, he takes on that flower's meaning as well: rising clean from difficult ground, a sign that healing is possible after hardship.

Placed outdoors, where weather softens the surface over time, he becomes a figure of healing that ages openly alongside the garden he watches over.

Can this statue stay outside year-round?

Yes. Polystone is finished for outdoor use, though bringing it indoors during extreme freezes or prolonged heavy rain will help preserve the surface longer.

Why does the finish look rough or scuffed?

The soft grey finish is intentionally distressed with visible marks and texture, meant to look naturally weathered rather than smooth and polished.

Where is the best place to put it?

Set it among plants, near a garden path, or beside a meditation bench. Indoors, it works well on an altar or by a window facing the garden.

My dear friend Gwen McCarthy died recently, and she was a yoga instructor. We both had breast cancer so we were bosom buddies. She was told in another incarnation I was her mother, and once her daughter. Often, although I am not as "into it" as she was, but I would buy her meditation animals etc, she did a mala for me etc. She bought me through Buddha Grove a meditating frog, and so the medicinal buddha will sit next to the frog outdoors. A warning to folks that sometimes the Cement items don't hold up as well, the statues are worrisome if they have "fragile" parts like the bunnies, ears or arms and legs of a goddess thinner than the other parts of the statue, which is why I went for this one and as it is heavier than resin (which can crack in time or break) and in my view, more durable and detailed than the cement. Very very pleased with this and for those considering it, this is the exact same one as the pure white/this is greyer and $20 less expensive.
