A round zafu meditation cushion in cotton twill, pleated and gently domed with a side carry handle. Filled with buckwheat hulls that mold to the body while holding firm, it lifts the hips to let the spine stack naturally in seated practice. Choose navy, burgundy, or orange to suit the room where you sit.

Details
  • Design: Round, pleated meditation cushion in sturdy cotton twill, gently domed with a side carry handle, offered in navy, burgundy, or orange
  • Size: 16 inches across, 5 inches high; weighs approximately 6-7 pounds
  • Material: 100% cotton twill weave cover with a separate cotton insert stuffed with buckwheat hulls
  • Included: Zip-off twill cover and separate cotton insert with buckwheat hull fill
  • Care: Unzip and spot clean or hand wash the cotton cover, then air dry. The buckwheat-filled insert should not be washed

Meaning & Intention

The zafu takes its name from a Japanese word meaning simply sitting cushion. Its round form has anchored seated meditation across Zen and Buddhist traditions for centuries, lifting the hips above the knees so the spine can stack without strain.

Buckwheat hulls have long been the fill of choice because they hold their structure rather than compress flat. There is a symbolism in that responsiveness: grounded but not rigid, stable but adaptable.

The color you choose carries its own intention. Navy suggests depth and introspection. Burgundy speaks to grounded strength. Orange recalls the saffron robes of Buddhist monks, long associated with humility and awakened attention.

Set in a bedroom corner, a sunlit nook, or beside a small altar, the cushion turns an ordinary patch of floor into a place the body recognizes as time to slow down.

Essence & Elements

Intention: Stillness, grounding, balance, focus

Chakra connection: Root chakra (Muladhara)

Ideal for: Meditators, yoga practitioners, and anyone building a home seated-meditation practice

Suggested mantra: Still body, calm mind

Symbol: The circle, a form without beginning or end

Questions & Guidance

Is this cushion good for beginners?

Yes. The firm, stable lift makes cross-legged sitting more comfortable for new meditators, while experienced practitioners appreciate the support during longer sits.

How do I use it in a practice?

Sit toward the front edge so the hips tilt slightly forward and the knees rest lower than the pelvis. Let the spine lengthen, settle the hands, and begin.

Why buckwheat hulls instead of foam?

The hulls mold around the sit bones while holding their shape, giving firm, breathable support. Foam tends to compress flat over time; buckwheat keeps its structure.

Where should I keep it between sits?

Anywhere that invites you back: a bedroom corner, a reading nook, or beside a small altar. The side handle makes it easy to move from room to room.

Very well made and human friendly

I loved it but unfortunately I had to return it only because of my physical limitations. I was hoping I could sit on a Zafu but I found out, my body could not do it as I have structural issues. But the Zafu is quality, nicely made and has a handle to carry it around. I very much appreciated it and was sad to let it go.
